Breathing Through the Box
After building a cybersecurity fortune on media panic, John McAfee claimed he would never die by his own hand.
Unraveling McAfee's trajectory shows how early digital hype and deliberate public hoaxes can fuel persistent conspiracy theories long after courts and forensic science establish the facts.
Key facts
- John McAfee's fortune reportedly fell from about $100 million to $4 million following the 2008 economic collapse. By the time of his death, Celebrity Net Worth similarly estimated his net worth at roughly $4 million.
- A Florida federal court entered a default judgment ordering John McAfee to pay over $25 million to Gregory Faull's estate in a wrongful death lawsuit, though McAfee stated on Twitter that he had no intention of paying.
- The SEC alleged John McAfee received more than $23 million in digital assets for promoting initial coin offerings on Twitter while misleading investors by pretending to be an independent voice.
- On June 23, 2021, Spain's National Court authorized John McAfee's extradition to the United States. That same day, the 75-year-old antivirus founder died by suicide in his cell at Brians prison in Barcelona.
Timeline
McAfee founded McAfee Associates to sell commercial antivirus software, warned in 1992 that Michelangelo could affect millions of computers (only tens of thousands were infected), resigned in 1994, and sold his remaining shares in 1996 for roughly $100 million.

The Michelangelo Panic
Mara: In 1986, John David McAfee came across an early infection known as the Brain virus. Instead of writing a fix himself, he logged onto a digital message board and recruited Dennis Yell. McAfee gave the programmer two hundred dollars to develop VirusScan, keeping legal ownership of the code.
Eli: Two hundred dollars to seed an entire cybersecurity empire.
Mara: Today's angle is what parts of John McAfee's early career are verified facts. By 1987, he established McAfee Associates to market commercial antivirus software. It worked as a digital sentry, scanning disk drives to uncover and disable harmful files before they wrecked the machine.
Eli: He caught on quickly that dread sells faster than technology. In early 1992, McAfee appeared on national broadcast networks claiming the Michelangelo virus might cripple up to 5 million computers.
Mara: When the dreaded day actually arrived, only tens of thousands of systems were affected.
Eli: The digital ruin never materialized, yet the sheer panic sent sales through the roof. That commercial rush carried the firm straight to Wall Street as a multimillion-dollar enterprise.
Mara: He had little appetite for corporate management, though. McAfee walked away from McAfee Associates in 1994. Two years later, he liquidated his remaining stock for roughly $100 million.
Eli: Roughly $100 million in personal net worth, giving him license to view truth as an optional game. In 2010, McAfee wrote that he was an inveterate practical joker who treated reporters no differently than he treated next-door neighbors.
Mara: McAfee later admitted that his claims regarding the ease of cracking the San Bernardino shooter's encrypted iPhone were a publicity stunt, while still asserting it was possible.
Eli: John David McAfee had transformed from a cybersecurity trailblazer into an international fugitive, and he described his media philosophy directly: “I will fabricate whatever reality I see fit to keep eyeballs on us.”
Mara: Armed with a fortune and that total disregard for facts, he set off on a path that soon spiraled out of control. How did a multimillionaire software pioneer end up running through the jungles of Central America?
Buried in the Sand
Eli: The financial crash of the late 2000s wiped out most of McAfee's fortune. Around 2008, he relocated to Belize and built a secluded compound along a jungle river.
Mara: That river property was heavily guarded by armed men.
Eli: In 2012, forty-two police officers and soldiers launched a dawn raid looking for weapons and narcotics. They fatally shot a guard dog and took McAfee into custody. After finding no methamphetamine, authorities released him, and McAfee abandoned the jungle for Ambergris Caye.
Mara: Friction surrounded his new island home almost immediately. After his dogs were poisoned on the compound, his neighbor Gregory Faull was shot to death just one day later.
Eli: Faull was a fifty-two-year-old American living in the Mata Grande area. In November 2012, he was found dead inside his home with a single gunshot wound to the back of his head.
Mara: Belizean police named McAfee a person of interest. That meant investigators wanted to bring him in for questioning, rather than formally arresting him with criminal charges.
Eli: McAfee refused to speak with them. He claimed that while police searched his property, he hid for hours buried up to his neck in sand on the beach, breathing through a cardboard box over his head.
Mara: Breathing through a box in the sand sounds completely unhinged, even for someone known for inventing stories.
Eli: His flight across Belize became even more elaborate. Traveling along the Southern Highway toward Guatemala, McAfee stuffed flower petals into his mouth, wore taped-together glasses, and held his arm stiff to mimic an elderly stroke victim.
Mara: That disguise got him into Guatemala, but the reporters tagging along ruined the escape. Vice published an image of McAfee beside reporter Rocco Castoro with the headline 'We're with John McAfee, suckers.' The file still carried embedded GPS metadata that records where a photo was taken, exposing his precise coordinates right by a resort swimming pool.
Eli: The man who pioneered commercial antivirus software was undone by basic phone coordinates.
Mara: Guatemalan police took him into custody, where McAfee later said he feigned heart attacks. That delay bought his lawyer time to lodge appeals, stopping any transfer back to Belize before officials deported him to Miami in December 2012.
Eli: He walked into Miami completely free, leaving an unresolved killing behind on Ambergris Caye. But whether American courts would ever force a reckoning for Gregory Faull's death remained an open question.
A Yacht on the Run
Mara: The day after landing in Miami, McAfee hired Janice Dyson, who later married him and remained his wife until his death. Belize never criminally charged him, but Gregory Faull's estate filed a wrongful death suit in Florida. Because McAfee refused to answer the complaint, Judge Gregory Presnell granted a default judgment, which automatically decided liability against him for failing to respond. That court order required McAfee to pay over 25 million dollars to Faull's estate.
Eli: Over 25 million dollars, and he completely blew it off. He tweeted that paying was a 'mute point' since he claimed to have no assets left.
Mara: Claiming zero assets after walking away with a tech fortune.
Eli: He even boasted on Twitter that he had not responded to a single one of his 37 lawsuits. By January 2019, McAfee announced he was living on a boat to evade American law enforcement, before Dominican authorities briefly detained him on a yacht suspected of hauling weapons.
Mara: Living on a yacht could not outrun the tax authorities. In June 2020, the Justice Department indicted McAfee in Tennessee for tax evasion, charging that he failed to file returns from 2014 to 2018 despite pulling in millions from speaking gigs and cryptocurrency deals.
Eli: The SEC hit him as well, alleging he took over 23 million dollars in secret pay while touting digital coin investments to his online followers as an independent voice.
Mara: Over 23 million dollars in undisclosed fees.
Eli: He flaunted his '$WHACKD tattoo' online around then, claiming that if he ever died by suicide, someone murdered him.
Mara: Then Manhattan federal prosecutors charged McAfee and his bodyguard, Jimmy Gale Watson Jr., over a pump-and-dump scheme. In plain terms, that means buying up cheap tokens, hyping them to a huge audience to artificially pump the price, and secretly dumping them at the peak.
Eli: With criminal warrants waiting in Memphis and Manhattan, where did McAfee's international run finally run out of runway?
Boarding at El Prat
Mara: That international run finally ran out of runway on October 3, 2020, at Barcelona’s El Prat airport.
Eli: Spanish National Police intercepted seventy-five-year-old John McAfee alongside two companions as they prepared to board a flight to Istanbul. When officers ran his passport through the database, an alert flagged the American warrant, and prosecutors in Tennessee unsealed that June indictment two days later.
Mara: Authorities transferred him to Brians 2, a prison outside Barcelona, where he was held while proceedings began. During his detention in Spain, his net worth had fallen to an estimated four million dollars, but on Twitter he claimed his remaining assets were seized and his crypto had dissolved through associates.
Eli: From the fortune he built decades earlier, almost nothing was left. By June 2021, his fight to avoid returning to the United States reached a hearing.
Mara: The court was weighing extradition to decide whether Spain would formally hand him over to face American criminal charges.
Eli: McAfee testified by videolink on June 15, arguing the charges were politically motivated and claiming Washington wanted to make an example of him. At seventy-five, he warned the court that any federal sentence would be a disguised life sentence.
Mara: Spain’s National Court rejected that argument. On June 23, 2021, the court authorized his extradition, finding no revealing evidence of political motivation behind the American prosecution.
Eli: McAfee had learned about the ruling on Monday, before his death on Wednesday.
Mara: McAfee had asked to spend time in his cell.
Eli: That ruling authorized his extradition to the United States.
The Verdict of Cell 71
Mara: On June 23, 2021, a worker entered McAfee's cell at Brians prison. In cell 71, John David McAfee, the antivirus founder, was hanging alone. Investigators recovered a note from his pocket, in which McAfee wrote, "Instead of living it fully, I want to control my future, which does not exist."
Eli: Warders tried for 15 minutes to revive him. He was pronounced dead there.
Mara: He was 75.
Eli: His wife, Janice McAfee, who'd accompanied him on the run, challenged the suicide finding. She recalled their phone call hours earlier and his last words to her: "I love you and I will call you in the evening." To her, that wasn't what a suicidal person would say.
Mara: Janice blamed the US authorities for his death.
Eli: Online followers pointed back to McAfee's 2019 tweet and the "$WHACKD" tattoo from his time on the yacht. He'd written, "If I suicide myself, I didn't. I was whacked."
Mara: Medical examiners checked his body and injuries in a forensic autopsy to work out how he died. El País reported that the preliminary findings confirmed suicide. The Provincial Court of Barcelona said police reports, photographs and prison recordings supported that conclusion. Those recordings showed he'd had no contact with other inmates that day.
Eli: His defense lawyer, Javier Villalba, said he had no evidence of foul play. He blamed the system's cruelty for keeping McAfee imprisoned after judges denied bail.
Mara: Janice appealed the closure and requested another autopsy. In September 2023, the Provincial Court of Barcelona rejected her appeal for good. The Spanish judge in the case ruled, "There is not a single element of suspicion of charges against third parties."
Eli: Barcelona's court described the lingering doubts as part of mourning, of the terrible experience of losing someone.
Mara: That decision permanently closed the case.
Eli: Remember McAfee's admission about inventing realities to keep attention on him. His earlier suicide warning became the line his followers returned to.
Mara: John McAfee's death wasn't alleged. Medical examiners confirmed it. The court's final conclusion was suicide.
Eli: You can read into extradition.
Mara: And follow law and justice with us, to see how courts handle fugitives across borders.
Eli: That's it for today. I'm Eli.
Mara: And I'm Mara. Thanks for listening, and until next time on Angle.
